Added lines 1-7:
The New York Hustle began in New York City in the early 1970's, principally in the Puerto Rican community. It soon became the principal partner dance, standing out amongst dances such as the Rope, Puerto Rican Latin Hustle, and Spinning Latin Hustle.
The New York Hustle is emblematic of the 1970's "me" generation and Disco Dancing. Fast spins, extended arms and sexy attitudes were characteristic. Spectacular aerials, dips, and drops accompanied the New York Hustle in dance contests around the country from the mid-70's through mid-80's. Merv Griffin brought some of these talented dancers to the small screen through specials featuring the Disco Dance Dimensions and the syndicated Dance Fever show.
The basic New York Hustle step has the "Quick-Quick-Slow-Slow" (and-one-two-three) rhythm, comprising three beats (some contemporary teachers use "Slow-Slow-Quick-Quick"). Partners start with the woman's right foot in front of her left, and the man's left foot in front of his right [follow and lead parts, respectively]. The first beat (Quick-Quick)entails the woman stepping back with her right foot to meet the left, and then forward with her left (opposite for men). She then steps forward on her right, turns half-way around, and back on her left. The man performs the opposite footwork, moving across her body.
